Thanksgiving Volunteer Opportunities: Help Locally!

Thanksgiving is quickly approaching and we couldn’t be more excited! Unfortunately, this time of year isn’t as exciting for some as it is for others. For those who have lost loved ones or are struggling to make ends meet, it can be an incredibly hard time to get through, especially if they have children to provide for as well. Instead of over-stuffing ourselves with the plentiful feasts we prepare, let’s set aside some time to give back! The holidays are a special time for us to reflect on the many blessings we have and to share with others who are less fortunate. Getting involved is easy, there are many local organizations intent on spreading holiday cheer to those who need it most. Not sure where to go? Here are a few volunteer opportunities to consider!

The Stewpot
The Stewpot was started in 1975 by an associate pastor at First Presbyterian Church. This organization provides over 500,000 meals every year to those facing homelessness. In May 2008 The Stewpot became the partner agency for meal services at The Bridge Homeless Assistance Center, conveniently located just three blocks south of The Stewpot. The dining room there is called the Second Chance Café and currently is serving three meals a day, seven days a week to approximately 1000 people each day. This means there are MANY opportunities available for volunteers to dish out the food and pour beverages for guests once they are seated. If you’d like to volunteer for the Thanksgiving holiday, or any other time please check out their Meal Service site here.

Dallas LIFE

Dallas LIFE is a place where homeless men, women and children can receive help and hope during their time of need. Their mission is to provide a path to recovery and self-sufficient living and provides a promise that there is a way to begin again. Their doors opened in 1954 in a small storefront location on Commerce Street and housed only 25 men each night. Thanks to founder Reverend Robert J. Key and his volunteers, the shelter is now the largest homeless shelter in North Texas. Dallas LIFE has many volunteer opportunities, including Thanksgiving Meal Services. To get involved be sure to check out their volunteer page here.

The SoupMobile
The SoupMobile currently serves more than 200,000 meals a year to those in need. They help give hope and a helping hand to those in serious need. There are many ways volunteers can help. Everything from sandwich making and cookie packing to food serving, supply delivery and office assistance is needed. There are opportunities for everyone! If you’re interested in getting involved for Thanksgiving check out their volunteer page to sign up!

OurCalling exists to glorify God by leading homeless people to Christ and by making disciples on the streets. It is their mission to build long-term relationships with homeless individuals in order to lead them to a relationship with Christ and to invest in their lives through Christian discipleship. Their conviction is that every Christian believer should live a life of righteousness, holiness, integrity and accountability. They focus on four different areas to accomplish their mission: education, mentoring, recovery and resource distribution.  As part of their resource distribution, they host many events to help feed the hungry. The annual Thanksgiving Day event is their largest event of the year. They expect over 1,000 participants! For more information or to scheduling volunteering on this day, please visit their Thanksgiving volunteer page here.

These organizations are just a few of the MANY local opportunities you have available. Be sure to check your area to see where your best fit might be!
